RGA UK History


  • RGA UK was established in 1998 and received a full license to offer reinsurance products in 2000.
  • Beginning in 2001, RGA’s automated underwriting system, AURA, was adopted by several clients, including the U.K.’s largest protection writer.
  • In 2004, RGA UK developed a U.K. and Irish version of the Global Underwriting Manual, which continues to be updated using evidence-based analysis, and became RGA’s second-largest revenue producer.
  • In 2007, the office was named “Large Insurer’s Reinsurer of the Year” in the Redmayne Consulting annual survey of U.K. clients and the office entered the underwritten annuity market.
  • In 2008, the office signed its first bulk annuity contract and the AURA system started offering online real-time quotes for underwritten annuities.
  • In 2009, the office signed its first group life treaty.
  • In 2010, RGA was named “Best Reinsurer for Longevity Risk Transfer” by the Life & Pension Risk Awards; and RGA UK was named “Best Overall Life Reinsurer” in the Flaspöhler Cedant Survey of life reinsurance companies in the U.K. and Ireland.
  • In 2009, 2010 and 2011, RGA UK was ranked No. 1 in Business Capability Index (BCI) in cedant studies by NMG Consulting of nearly 100 buyers and users of reinsurance in the U.K. and Ireland.

RGA History


  • RGA began operating in the United States in 1973 as General American Re, the reinsurance division created by General American Life Insurance Company. The division started with five employees in one location.
  • In 1978 the facultative underwriting department was established with two employees.
  • In 1979, Greig Woodring joined General American Re as the company’s first actuary and is now RGA’s President and Chief Executive Officer.
  • In 1984, General American Re was the eighth-largest life reinsurer in the U.S. Six years later the company was the second-largest life reinsurer in the country.
  • In 1991, RGA launched its first online reinsurance underwriting system.
  • In 1992, General American chartered Reinsurance Group of America, Incorporated (RGA) as a holding company for its reinsurance operations.
  • In 1992, RGA opened its first international office when it acquired National Re of Canada, which became RGA Life Reinsurance Company of Canada.
  • In 1993, RGA began being traded publicly on the New York Stock Exchange.
  • By 1999, RGA opened additional offices in Spain, Hong Kong, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia, South Africa, the U.K., Mexico and Taiwan.
  • In 2000, Metropolitan Life Insurance Company (MetLife, Inc.) acquired GenAmerica Corporation, which included General American and its subsidiaries, gaining effective control of RGA. In 2008, RGA became a stand-alone company after it split off from MetLife, Inc.
  • Between 2002 and 2010, RGA opened additional offices in South Korea, India, China, Poland, France, Italy, Germany and the Netherlands.
  • RGA ended 2010 with more than $29 billion in assets and $2.5 trillion of life reinsurance in force.
