​U.S. Markets History


  • In 1998, the U.S. facultative underwriting team reached a significant milestone with the receipt of its 1,000,000th facultative application.
  • In 1998, RGA joined with the School of Medicine at Washington University in
    St. Louis to co-sponsor the RGA/Washington University Longer Life Foundation.
  • In 2005, RGA Reinsurance Company was named "Best Overall Life Reinsurer” by North American life insurers in the biennial Flaspöhler Cedant Survey. RGA also received this recognition in 2007, 2009 and 2011.
  • In 2007, U.S. Markets launched a highly successful series of webcast seminars for clients.
  • In 2008, the U.S. facultative underwriting team reached another significant milestone with the receipt of its 2,000,000th facultative application.
  • In 2010, RGA finalized the acquisition of U.S. and Canadian group life, accident and health reinsurance business from ING Group, which became U.S. Group Reinsurance.


RGA History


  • RGA began operating in the United States in 1973 as General American Re, the reinsurance division created by General American Life Insurance Company. The division started with five employees in one location.
  • In 1978, the facultative underwriting department was established with two employees.
  • In 1979, Greig Woodring joined General American Re as the company’s first actuary and is now RGA’s president and chief executive officer.
  • In 1984, General American Re was the eighth-largest life reinsurer in the U.S. Six years later the company was the second-largest life reinsurer in the country.
  • In 1991, RGA launched its first online reinsurance underwriting system.
  • In 1992, General American chartered Reinsurance Group of America, Inc. (RGA) as a holding company for its reinsurance operations.
  • In 1992, RGA opened its first international office when it acquired National Re of Canada, which became RGA Life Reinsurance Company of Canada.
  • In 1993, RGA began being traded publicly on the New York Stock Exchange.
  • By 1999, RGA opened additional offices in Spain, Hong Kong, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia, South Africa, the U.K., Mexico and Taiwan.
  • In 2000, Metropolitan Life Insurance Company (MetLife, Inc.) acquired GenAmerica Corporation, which included General American and its subsidiaries, gaining effective control of RGA.
  • In 2008, RGA became a stand-alone company after it split off from MetLife, Inc.
  • Between 2002 and 2010, RGA opened additional offices in South Korea, India, China, Poland, France, Italy, Germany and the Netherlands.
  • RGA ended 2010 with more than $29 billion in assets and $2.5 trillion of life reinsurance in force.
