Eric Westhus is a Lead Data Scientist at RGA, and applies advanced analytics, AI, and statistical modeling to underwriting, pricing, and risk management challenges for clients in the Americas. He combines deep technical expertise with a collaborative leadership style, translating complex data science concepts into practical, business-ready solutions across global markets.
Since joining RGA in 2017, Eric has played a central role in building and scaling advanced data science functions. He has overseen the development and launch of numerous AI-driven initiatives, including digital underwriting solutions, NLP-based document analysis, and automated risk assessment tools. His work has supported both proof of concept innovation and production-grade solutions, helping modernize underwriting workflows and improve decision quality. Eric continues to guide RGA’s machine learning, NLP, and AI efforts within RGA’s digital underwriting efforts, balancing technical rigor with real world applicability.
Prior to RGA, Eric held academic appointments at Saint Louis University, where he taught biostatistics and programming and helped launch one of the region’s early health data science degree programs. He began his career in biological and environmental research, with experience spanning statistics, genomics, GIS, and quantitative ecology.
Eric holds a Ph.D. in integrated and applied sciences (biometry) from Saint Louis University, along with graduate and undergraduate degrees in biology.
