We believe that by incorporating climate risk into our robust and rigorous risk management framework, we can prepare all aspects of our business for the impacts of climate change.

Understanding Impacts

We understand that the impact of an increase in global average temperatures could cause changes in weather patterns, resulting in more severe and more frequent natural disasters such as forest fires, hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, and storm surges.

This impact may increase disease incidence and severity, food and water supplies, and the general health of impacted populations. Such climate change trends are expected to continue into the future and may impact nearly all sectors of the economy to varying degrees.

Active Monitoring

Climate change is actively monitored. While the long-term impacts of climate change for the company and our clients are unknown, climate change impacts are part of the ongoing monitoring of RGA’s emerging experience for anything that might change underlying mortality and morbidity trends.

Also, scenario reviews and planning are undertaken for various climate change-related events. RGA considers the potential effects of climate change in our ORSA and enterprise risk management processes, which inform our business strategy.

Offsetting Emissions

With the aid of Cloverly, a certified carbon offset company, RGA is working to reduce the company's carbon footprint by funding verified CO2-saving projects around the world. These can involve decarbonizing electricity grids, improving energy efficiency, reforestation, or reducing deforestation. Learn more about how two RGA-funded projects are having a positive impact on the planet.

Rimba Raya Biodiversity Reserve

The Rimba Raya Biodiversity Reserve Project in Indonesia preserves nearly 65,000 ha of tropical swamp forest originally slated to be converted into palm oil plantations. The project protects and preserves tropical lowland peat swamp forests, which have a high carbon storage capacity, protects hundreds of at-risk species such as the Bornean orangutan, Asian sun bear, and clouded leopard, and supports local communities.

Trees for Global Benefits

Managed under the Plan Vivo Standard, the Trees for Global Benefits (TGB) project supports a long-running cooperative carbon offsetting program in the Albertine Rift and Mt Elgon in Northern Uganda covering an area of 6,000 hectares. Participating communities plant indigenous and agroforestry trees that are under threat from logging for timber and are compensated by the not-for-profit project developer, The Environmental Conservation Trust of Uganda through the sale of carbon credits.  By planting over 2 million trees, mostly native species, the project has helped restore lost biodiversity.

Strong Governance

We recognize the need for strong sustainability governance, effective management systems, and robust controls embedded within our business operations and long-term strategies. RGA monitors and controls environmental and societal impacts and adopts responsible approaches toward sustainability issues.

  • The RGA Board of Directors works closely with executive leadership to guide our sustainability strategy, initiatives, and execution. The Board has an active and ongoing role in overseeing corporate risks, as a whole and at the committee and subgroup level, and primarily oversees enterprise risk through its Risk Committee, which is responsible for the management of the enterprise risk management program and policies. The Risk Committee also receives regular reports and assessments describing our critical risk exposures, including quantitative and qualitative assessments and information about breaches, exceptions, and waivers
  • RGA’s ESG Steering Committee develops, champions, and advises on our overall sustainability strategy, policies, and initiatives. The committee is composed of more than a dozen leaders from all major functions and office locations, all of whom are well-positioned to integrate and oversee sustainable business practices across our global operations
