Exercise and Your Heart

Can there be too much of a good thing?

In Brief

Is there a point at which a good thing becomes a bad thing?

Regular moderate exercise prolongs life, decreases the risk of certain cancers, and may even slow the onset of dementia. But what about exercise that exceeds moderate levels, as is seen with athletes who push beyond the frontiers of human endurance. RGA’s Consulting Medical Officer, UK, and clinical cardiologist Dr. Nick Boon discusses how the various cardiovascular adaptations of an athlete’s heart may at times overlap with the mild expression of primary cardiomyopathies, and intense exercise could cause arrhythmogenic sudden cardiac death. In addition, Dr. Boon examines the insurance dilemma of trying to decide who has a “normal athletic heart” and who may be at risk for sudden cardiac death.

At RGA, we are eager to engage with clients to better understand and tackle the industry’s most pressing challenges together. Contact us to discuss and learn more about the RGA capabilities, resources, and solutions.
